Hi LJ, remember me?

Well I just have a quick help-me to send out to NOLA ppl;
I desperately need a projector, I'm not picky about what type -- if you have it and will let me borrow it for a week or two, I'll make it work.
It's for art purposes, if that makes a difference; I don't really have a hundred+ bucks to blow on one just for this project.

Let me know thru email (j0anie@hotmail.com) or call me (504 231 8695).

Need mac wireless help [17 Apr 2007|01:33pm]
Just got a new laptop, well... newish... Anyway, my airport card picks up the signal for Dan's encrypted wireless network at the house, but it only gives me the option to connect using a WPA encrypted passcode, and I'm fairly sure that the network passcode is WEP encrypted. Why do I only have the option of entering a WPA passcode on my damn computer? If I change the current passcode to one that's just long enough to meet the predetermined WPA code length, will it work? Doesn't seem like it should. Could it have something to do with security settings like, my computer trying to be all elite and discourage me from connecting to a substandard WEP encrypted connection or something? I am possibly going to reconfigure the whole damn wireless network, but I really don't wanna, so, anyone could help a sister out?

PS I run OSX.. Jaguar, I think? Only had it 2 days and the airport card is internal if that makes a difference.

Inspiration [20 Mar 2007|03:18pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

Today I met someone who totally rocked my world. Her name is Aubrey.

What she does is, she travels around the US taking photos of various bands and doing freelance work that she really enjoys. She has tattoos and dresses how she wants and seems really fucking happy with what she does.

She taught us some things about lighting, and some things about equipment, and let us use her big fancy nikon and white lightning kit to take pictures of each other. And I am pumped, because I got to meet a photographer that does pretty much exactly what I want to do with my life... And she does it well.

So today has pretty much been a good day :) Not that there aren't other good things going on... That's just the most current.

So. New Apartment drama. I think I'm going to scream.

We signed a lease on the 3rd, with hopes of having the power on by the 5th. When we called to place our order, Entergy informed us that a permit needed to be filed in order to get service at our location, since the place hasn't had service in over 6 months.

This is where our new landlord starts to emerge as a total whackjob.

It's been about 5 days since we told him about this situation, in which time he's had various electricians out to look at the place, and oh, snap, about half the power outlets need to be replaced. And apparently, so does the breaker for one of the major appliances.

So yesterday, me and (roommate) Desiree move some stuff in around 4:30, and see these electricians fiddling around with all the wires and shit. I go "home" to walk the dogs and do schoolwork, and she goes back to the apartment, by which time the landlord has shown up and is IN the apartment with the electricians replacing all of these outlets. Desiree chooses this time to ask the landlord if we will be getting our rent prorated for the following month to compensate for this total clusterfuck. And he tells her not to bother him and please go away...

Well Desiree is about as irritated as I am right now, as he's been giving us the runaround on this issue ever since we first told him about it. Not to mention, we've paid first months' rent and deposit in the same amount, and he wants last months' rent as well, and rushed us into a lease so he wouldn't have to prorate the first months' rent at the start. Well it's not livable, so yeah, we're pissed.

So, she pressures him a bit, at which point he basically starts getting really nasty and ordering her out of the apartment, calling me a liar for reminding him he waived the pet deposit at lease signing (another angle he presented to get us in there asap since the competing apartment wasn't going to charge me one) and saying we swindled him down to 1000 a month (I totally didn't even ASK him to go that low) for rent and now he's out 2400 in annual income, and basically he had a huge hissy fit because she asked him to compensate for the inconvenience of throwing all this money at an apartment that's not livable due to his oversight / irresponsibility.

So they got into a fight, and she left, and now we're trying to figure out if we need to get a lawyer in on this. I hate starting out this arrangement in high drama, because I was hoping to avoid further moving in this city. I want this to be my last change of address until I get out of college and move away, and it would help me in that ambition to get along with my landlord. Too bad he's kind of a psycho.

Here's the next charming bit of the story:

He calls me last night (after the fight) and says "hey, just so you know, the power is on in the apartment now, so you guys can start staying there." No way did Entergy make it out there to get service on last night, because they haven't even filed this permit yet. Which means he had his electricians ghetto-rig the power off someone else's service, probably another tenant's. There will almost surely be a service interruption when Entergy comes out themselves to inspect the place and realizes its got power illegally rigged off someone else's supply. And I told him over the phone that I would expect him to take responsibility in such a situation, but of course he's just looking for a way to say "look, see, I fixed your problem, now give me all of my money." Oh, and one of the breakers for a major appliance (ac or water heater, he doesn't know which) is not there, he took it out and is supposedly replacing it today.

Whatever the outcome of all this is, this guy is being so shady and crazy that I don't really feel safe knowing he can just waltz up into our place whenever he wants.

wtf...

Is this situation just too fucking shady to be wrapped up in? Or is this just more typical, obnoxious New Orleans rental drama? Ugh...

Well, votes were 13-0 in favor of General Taylor. Luckily, that's the one I signed a lease on. Packed more than half my stuff today, and the rest will get boxed after my Thursday critique... Between now and then, just gotta get that power turned on.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP [03 Mar 2007|10:06am]
My dilemma is thus:

I found 2 apartments that meet my basic criteria. Both are spacious with high ceilings, two separate bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and kitchens large enough to cook comfortably in. Both also have shared laundry rooms with other tenants, and both landlords assured me that there's no noise between apartments. Both places are upper units, and both will allow Chloe.

Apt A
Is on General Taylor & Coliseum in a BEAUTIFUL safe neighborhood (Garden District, w00t). It is a little further from work than I wanted to be, but I can still walk there on nice days. There is some grass right outside the door for Chloe to do her business in on the fly, and I'd feel safe walking her around the area all day and all night.
The kitchen has a dishwasher, although the appliances are rather old (I was assured they work nonetheless but they look a little crusty). Living room/dining room is separated by a non-working fireplace with exposed brick, and the living room side has exposed beams. There is also a spiral staircase leading up to a little loft with a tiny window that would make a great reading/relaxing spot. The bedrooms are a pretty decent size.
This one is close to: Bluebird cafe, Quik Mart thing, Hospitals & doctors galore (?), Rite Aid, and walking distance from some Magazine St shops (Ace Hardware being the one in that area I'd visit the most)

Apt B
Is on St. Andrew, 1 block of of St. Charles. It is 5 blocks from my work, and I can catch the St Charles bus/streetcar easily. The place is clean with prety fresh paint, the living room/dining room area is spacious and there is again, a non working fireplace in the living room, though it's in the wall and has a mantle. The big plus side of this place is that there is a large shared patio outside, and the stairs into the apt. are outside too, so if I have people over, they can just step out to smoke. And I didn't see any shared yard or any place to BBQ in the other apartment. Drawbacks would be that the neighborhood, while nice, is not ridiculously safe because the other side of St. Charles is pretty yucky, and people get held up and robbed around Zea and Gulfstream all the time. There is not any grass outside and the landlord was skeptical to rent it to me with Chloe because people with dogs let them poop in the courtyard (big no-no). I would have to walk her down the block every time I let her out in the not-so-safe neighborhood. My would-be roommate also likes this location because it is a couple blocks from friends' houses.
This one is close to: work, Walgreen's, Zara's on Prytania, and the lower end of Magazine St. shops.

So, for the moment I am leaning toward the Coliseum apartment, which was listed for 1200, but when I told the guy I was going for an apartment that was 995, he told me he'd give me the Coliseum place for 1000! A bargain for that neighborhood. But I really would like it to have at least a newer stove, and somewhere I could be outside.

So.... What will it be? And please don't say "pick this one because omgz it's close to where I live!!!" I need to make a REAL decision by this afternoon.

Dear livejournal,

Here are some real-life things, happening, in my real life, right now:

I got dysentry in the DR and lost 5 lbs, it is still not completely gone so I am taking this opportunity to not eat.

My Doctor got shot in the face & hand and his wife was killed by some ghetto asshole who deserves to die from an unusually protracted case of ebola. Many of you have probably heard about this in the news. Ironically, she wanted to move back post-k because she loved the city and wanted to be here to support re-establishing efforts.

Right now I have menstrual cramps, and have been in bed all day photoshopping charlie manson t-shirt stencils and cutting a stencil for a necktie and eating noodle soup and myspacing.

Oh. and Dan and I are moving out in February, and I (yes, just me) need a roommate or two. Pet-friendly. Uptown. 500 a month or less and either 1st floor apt. or something with a fenced in backyard.

Last night I saw people that I missed. I am glad you guys are back.

Joanie

Mish tagged me for this like a month ago (yes I was paying attention), and I'm just now getting around to doing it because I am elljay-tarded lately. I have done a meme similar to this before, so if the answers sound familiar, that's why.

Write a journal entry with six random facts about yourself. Then, pick six of your friends list and tag them - no tagbacks. These rules should be included in your entry.

1. I often cannot tell the difference between right and left unless I hold up one or both of my hands to remind me.

2. I have had a mental condition for a few years (due to past drug abuse during an unstable part of my life) that causes me to have severe hallucinogenic experiences when I take too much of any drug (non-psychedelic drugs included).

3. Had I been born a boy, my name wold have been Elliot.

4. Until the age of about six, I could not distinguish the difference between white and yellow. When I finally learned how, yellow was deemed my favorite color for several years.

5. I am a natural blonde. (No rug/drapes jokes plz).

6. In high school, I was heavily medicated and endured frequent therapy because I enjoyed physical pain and rarely expressed any emotion whatsoever. Now I whine when I stub my toe and cry during disney movies.

I don't know who to tag, so just repost this if you feel the urge to do so.

You scored as Satanism. Your beliefs most closely resemble those of Satanism! Before you scream, do a bit of research on it. To be a Satanist, you don't actually have to believe in Satan. Satanism generally focuses upon the spiritual advancement of the self, rather than upon submission to a deity or a set of moral codes. Do some research if you immediately think of the satanic cult stereotype. Your beliefs may also resemble those of earth-based religions such as paganism.
